10 Facts About Microlink I-tips

High-end salons have been providing the Microlink I-tip services for years—but they’re gaining popularity as the latest underground beauty trend to come to the forefront on social media. Have you been wondering whether or not to get i-tips?
Is it worth it? How much do they cost? What is maintenance like? Well, we’re answering all your questions and more here! I-tip extensions have become very popular amongst all textures, even textured hair! If you are interested in investing in luxury extensions, make sure you properly educate yourself by reading this article.

1. What are Microlinks?

Microlinks, also referred to as microbeads or micro rings, are copper beads that are used to attach extensions to natural hair in lieu of glues, tapes, and thread. I-tip microlinks is a strand by strand technique that consists of pre-tipped Keratin I-tip strand of hair weighing 0.8g to 1g that’s attached using a special hair extension plier tool clamping to a small cluster of your own hair strand, combined using a copper or aluminum cylinder micro bead.

2. Cost

This style isn’t cheap and should be considered a long-term investment. The pricing will vary based on texture and length, but bundles of 100 pieces start around $151. Important things to note are that textured hair costs more, and you can expect to pay $5–$10 extra per bundle as you increase the desired lengths. Stylists can charge anywhere from $850-$2000 just to have them installed, and the extensions aren't always included in the price. 50-100 pieces come in a bundle, (Perfect Distraction comes with 100 pieces in a bundle) and a full head of extensions calls for about 150-200 pieces depending on the density of your hair.

3. Installation

Our I-Tips are pre-tipped with Keratin and are ready to install using our Itip Microlink Pliers and our non-fading, easy grip Microlink beads and our Microlink Looper. Nice clean lines are vital during the installation of your I-tips. Clean lines prevent breakage and damage to the clients hair and scalp. The install can last 20 to 24 weeks with proper maintenance and it’s required to have a microlink readjustment around the 10 to 12 week post installation.

4. How Long do Microlink I-Tip Services Take?

The installation process takes 4- hours. The installation is completely comfortable, causes no tension, and the service doesn't require any harsh chemicals. They're also easier to blend with your own hair, since your natural hair is still left out. The installation includes a shampoo, hydration treatment, install, cut and style. It’s vital to make sure you hair is completely healthy before install.

5. Who Can Get Microlinks?

Microlinks are suitable for almost anyone, so long as your natural hair is at least four inches long and your hair is fine to medium or medium to thick. Anyone who suffers with scalp sensitivity when receiving braids but loves wearing hair extensions could use microlinks as an alternative. If you’re looking to achieve more length, density, color dimension, or to fill in those unwanted spaces that may have been the result of a bad cut or stress, microlinks are for you.

6. Do Microlinks Cause Breakage?

Microlink hair extensions do not require the use of heat, (though they can have heat used on them) adhesives or other chemicals and when installed properly, there shouldn’t be any damage to your real hair. They are also low maintenance since braids and glue are not required, hairstyling and maintenance should be pretty easy.

7.How do Microlink Hair Extensions Work for My Hair Texture?

We recommend a consultation with a reputable stylist to find out if your hair is suitable for microlinks. We also advise practicing good hair maintenance to ensure the extensions last longer. To maintain these extensions properly, you need to treat the strands as though they are your real hair, which includes regular washing and conditioning. At Perfect Distraction we offer FREE virtual and salon consultations. Book your Microlink consultation today.

8. How Do I Shampoo My Hair with Microlinks:

It’s suggested to go to the salon for microlink maintenance every two to three weeks, however, if you live a busy lifestyle we have a few tips on how to maintain your extensions at home. Never rub the top of the micro rings. Finger detangle your hair or use a wide tooth comb before shampooing to get any knots out. Get your favorite shampoo and apply some of it onto the scalp, we suggest using Perfect Distractions moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. You should do it in an area with no micro ring extensions. Massage the shampoo as you usually do it, without putting physical effort into it. Work the shampoo that is on your scalp gently down the natural hair strands, without skipping the Micro Link Hair Extensions.

9. How Long will Microlinks Last?

Microlink hair extensions can last up to six months with regular maintenance: detangling and washing regularly as you would do your own hair. There's no need to switch up your everyday routine. If you're able to get extensions that match your hair type, you're more likely to be free from the stress and damage of excessively using heat to keep your hair blended.

10. How do I Remove Microlinks?

The safest and most effective way to remove your microlink hair extensions is to seek professional assistance from a licensed cosmetologist, or you can use Perfect Distraction’s Microlink Pliers. Our Pliers have a firm edge to clamp the Micro Bead onto the I-Tip extensions and the clients hair. For easy removal, our pliers have three loop holes to remove the Micro Bead from the clients hair. The handles of our pliers are made of rubberized plastic soft grip and are ergonomically shaped to reduce stress in your hands.
