6 Mistakes People Make with Tape-Ins
It’s almost summertime and you want to try a new look. You should definitely try tape-ins! Have you been looking to try out tape-ins but are skeptical because you have no idea what they entail or how to take care of them? Are you overwhelmed by all the mistakes you could make with them and damaging your hair? Well, we got you. In this article, we will be discussing the five most common mistakes people make with tape-ins and how to fix or avoid them altogether.
1. Your Tapes are Visible When Your Hair is Pulled Back
Your tapes are too close to the scalp. Extensions placed too close to the scalp will result in them having zero movability, which will leave your scalp sore until the tapes grow out and give you very limited hairstyles to try. We recommend placing the extensions 2 to 5 centimeters from the scalp, or at least one inch of space from the hairline. Without enough natural hair density at the hairline, the tape will be visible, and no one wants that! For finer hair, you need to add a little more space due to the lack of density.
2. The Sections are Too Thin or Thick
You may think more hair between tape sandwiches equals a more secure install and longer-lasting extensions, but that’s not always the case. Too much hair between tapes prevents the adhesive from properly sealing, and the extensions won’t last as long. Sections that are too thin can cause damage or make it easier for the extensions to fall out. Sections that are too thick will make it harder for the adhesives to reach each other, causing them to also fall. If your tail comb can easily fit between the tapes, that means there is too much hair in the section and the adhesive isn’t sealed. Instead, take thin sections so the adhesive can seal correctly. So what’s the perfect section size? Sections should be about 1/8 of an inch, but if you’re unsure, use one extension tab for reference.
3. The Extensions are Noticeable
No one needs to know you’re wearing extensions. Of course, you want your hair seamlessly blended to prevent this embarrassing event from happening. Always have clean partings. “The cleaner the section, the easier the maintenance will be. Place the extensions in the direction the hair falls. Avoid overdirecting the hair. Not only will it be uncomfortable but it could cause breakage. You should attach the tape-ins at a soft diagonal section, make sure to be precise with your application, and make sure all the adhesive tabs are lined up.
4. The Texture Match Isn’t Perfect
Having two different textures in your head is what will be a clear sign that you’re wearing extensions. This is especially important if you have textured hair. The best way to prevent this is to find a company that sells different textures of hair that matches your own. That’s where Perfect Distraction Hair Gallery comes in. If you’re in the metro Atlanta area, you can come to either of our locations in Sandy Springs or Smyrna. You can see which hair texture is the best for you by feeling it with your hands and matching it to your own hair. 5. The Hair is Matting at the Roots
Matting can occur around the attachment of any permanent hair extensions and at the roots between the rows of the tapes if they are applied incorrectly for various reasons. Because they are too close to the scalp, too far away from the scalp, or have too much hair in the section. This can be very uncomfortable and can also cause damage to the hair extensions and most importantly your natural hair, so it is necessary to take caution to avoid this from happening. This is the reason why we advise having any semi-permanent extensions applied professionally to avoid any damage to your own hair. In the case of matting, the extensions should be removed and re-applied professionally, but there are some solutions you can do at home. To remove the matting gently separate the knots using a detangling spray or conditioner and a pintail comb. Make sure to always hold the hair above the matting to prevent damage or tension to the scalp.
6. Oops, My Extensions are Slipping
The weft of Tape-in extensions is made with medical-grade adhesive infused with Keratin. The adhesive allows the extensions to adhere to your natural hair for the duration of 6 to 8 weeks before re-tapping. When excessive products, oils, and grease are used on your extensions, it can loosen the adhesive and cause slippage. It’s vital to keep your scalp and the base of the extensions free of product, we advise keeping styling product one to two inches away from the weft of the extensions. Lastly, it’s important to shampoo your Tape-In extensions every 2 to 3 weeks to remove product buildup and natural oils that produce from your scalp. The cleaner you keep the weft of the extensions, the longer the installation will last.
